BUDAPEST TO MONTREAL
Gabor Szilasi retrospective exhibition entitled " The Eloquence of the Everyday" is at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, Canada until January 17, 2010.
It will then tour to McCord Museum in Montreal, Kelowna Art Gallery in British Columbia, Ryerson Gallery in Toronto and Musée des beaux arts de Sherbrooke in Quebec.
The 121 photographs in the exhibition span a fifty year period.  They form a social, cultural and historical documentation of a certain time in Quebec , the artist's adoptive country, and Hungary his birthplace.  Szilasi took the photographs in the first section of the exhibition in his native Hungary in the years 1954, 55, 56. The view of the man walking past  the gates of the Gresham building in Budapest (shown here) was made in 1956. The second section shows photographs the artist made while working and traveling through rural Québec  in the years 1970s and 1980s. The third section depicts the streets, the people, the buildings of the city of Montreal where Szilasi has lived since 1959.

A  237 page catalogue with reproductions of all the photographs in the exhibition accompanies the exhibition. It also has a detailed chronology and good introduction.
